Green Spotlight: Corbridge CC
For the first of our Green Spotlight series, we celebrate Corbridge CC, who have recently won The Cricketer magazine’s Greenest Ground 2023 award.
Congratulations to Corbridge Cricket Club for winning the Cricketer magazine’s Ortus Energy Greenest Ground 2023 award.
The Northumberland club were the judging panel’s unanimous award for the gong given their impressive range of efforts to green their ground over the last few years.
In 2013, the club installed solar panels on their new changing room extension which power the showers and the bar’s fridges - helping to keep running costs down.
But it was seeing firsthand the dangers of climate change in 2015 - the ground was flooded by Storm Desmond in 2015 - that really focused the club’s attention.
They have since rebuilt their pavilion - this time raised off the ground - and installed a large underground water tank and an electric pump to minimise the risk of future flooding. This setup also allows them to use untreated water for watering the square, further saving on their bills.
The club has also been making moves to improve biodiversity at the ground. They have recently invested in a scythe - so members can cut grass using only human power - and a wildflower area.
Club Chair John Maude praised the ECB for their support in the process - including their county grants fund, to which clubs can apply for help in tackling climate change.
Future plans at Corbridge include going electric with the square machinery and installing more solar panels as part of their new nets project.
